Windmill Tower is a small but consequential stop above Brisbane’s CBD. Built in 1828, Council identifies it as Queensland’s oldest standing building and one of only two surviving convict-built structures in the state. It rewards a short, careful visit because its story extends from the Moreton Bay penal settlement to signal communication and early broadcasting.

Read the tower in layers

The Council heritage trail (opens in a new tab) explains that the windmill was built to grind wheat and grain for the settlement. Its sails did not work as intended, and a separate timber treadmill was subsequently used both as punishment and as a reliable way to crush grain. This is difficult history, not a novelty: approach it with the context of the penal colony in mind.

After the settlement closed, the tower became a Telegraph Signal Station in 1861. In the 1920s it hosted Queensland Institute of Radio Engineers experiments, and Council records that Queensland’s first television broadcast was transmitted from the tower in 1934. Those later layers explain why the structure matters beyond its original function.

Plan an exterior heritage stop

The tower stands at 226 Wickham Terrace, Spring Hill, and is listed on the Queensland Heritage Register. Treat access to the site or interior as event-specific unless an official current access notice says otherwise; this guide does not promise routine entry. The exterior, setting and adjacent heritage trail are enough for a meaningful stop.

Pair it with King Edward Park, Jacob’s Ladder or other heritage-trail stops to turn the visit into a short walk. The tower is close to central-city streets but sits on a rise, so allow for slopes and steps when choosing the route.

Make the history do the work

The most useful visit is not long: pause, read the Council interpretation, notice the contrast between the tower and the surrounding city, and continue with the trail. That leaves the story clear without pretending a historic structure is a conventional open museum.
